How Bikepacking Taught Me the Beauty of Simplicity and Being Present

Waves, Wind, and Wild Hearts

Hello Friends,

As you read this, my wife Jana and I are somewhere along the Danish west coast, experiencing the freedom of bikepacking. This journey is a much-needed break from the usual hustle, allowing us to reconnect with nature and with each other. While I won't be stirring up deep discussions this time, I wanted to share a few thoughts from the road.

Embracing Simplicity

In our fast-paced lives, it's easy to get caught up in the noise and distractions. This bikepacking trip has reminded me of the beauty of simplicity. There’s something profoundly liberating about carrying only what you need and being fully present in each moment. Whether it's the sound of waves crashing on the shore or the feeling of the wind against your face (though, to be honest, the headwind isn’t always a joy), these simple pleasures have a way of grounding us.

Awestruck by Nature

The last time Jana and I did a bikepacking trip, we were awestruck by the sheer beauty of nature. Being away from the constant buzz of city life and the pressures of daily routines was incredibly relaxing. We found joy in the simplicity of riding our bikes, finding the next spot to sleep, fueling up with food, sticking to our planned route, and staying on schedule. Emails were on auto-response, and we were far, far away from our desks. It was a reminder of how little we actually need to feel content and fulfilled.

The Power of Presence

Being present is a gift we often overlook in our technology-driven world. Every day, we're bombarded with notifications, emails, and a constant stream of information that demands our attention. This bikepacking trip has been a refreshing escape from that relentless noise, offering a rare opportunity to disconnect from our digital lives and reconnect with the tangible, real-world experiences that truly matter.

Without the constant buzz of notifications, I've found more space to be present with my thoughts, with Jana, and with the world around us. It’s astonishing how much clarity and peace come from simply being in the moment. Without the urge to check my phone, I've been able to listen more deeply to Jana, sharing meaningful conversations that strengthen our bond. We've laughed together at the simple joys, like the unexpected encounters with wildlife or the shared struggle against a particularly fierce headwind.

This journey has also allowed me to be more attuned to my surroundings. The rhythmic cadence of pedaling, the ever-changing landscapes, and the raw, unfiltered beauty of nature have become my new focal points. I’ve noticed the subtle changes in the landscape, the different shades of green in the forests, the way the light changes at different times of the day. Each moment feels richer, more vivid, and profoundly real.

It's a powerful reminder of how important it is to disconnect from our devices and reconnect with ourselves and our loved ones. Being present means truly engaging with the people around us, appreciating the small details that we often miss, and finding joy in the simplicity of everyday moments. It’s about putting away our phones during meals, making eye contact, and really listening to one another. It’s about taking a break from the digital noise to hear the quiet whispers of our inner selves.

Presence is not just a physical state but a mental one. It’s about being here, now, fully immersed in the experience of living. This trip has been a beautiful lesson in mindfulness, teaching me that the most valuable moments in life are often the simplest ones, shared with the people we love.

Rediscovering Joy in Simplicity

The act of simplifying isn’t just about reducing possessions; it’s about enriching our experiences. It’s about finding joy in the mundane, in the small moments that often go unnoticed. The rustle of leaves, the sparkle of the sea, and the warmth of a shared silence—all these moments form the fabric of our lives. By stripping away the excess, we can see more clearly, feel more deeply, and live more fully.

A Simple Practice

I encourage you to take a moment this week to embrace simplicity and presence in your own way. It doesn’t have to be anything grand; sometimes the smallest actions can have the most profound impact. Maybe it’s a walk in the park, a quiet cup of coffee in the morning, or simply taking a few deep breaths and appreciating the here and now. These small moments of mindfulness can significantly enhance our well-being.

I’ll admit, I too am guilty of always grabbing my phone—having a quick look at Instagram or, when I’m at my desk, probably getting lost in a YouTube rabbit hole. It’s a habit that can easily distract us from the present and consume more time than we realize. But this is something that needs to change for all of us seeking a more mindful and fulfilling life.

To help break this cycle, consider using apps designed to foster mindfulness and reduce screen time. Apps like Forest, Stay Focused, or One Sec can block distracting apps or set counters that make you wait a minute every time you want to check Instagram. By the time the counter runs down, you’ve likely moved on from the urge to check it. These tools can be incredibly effective in helping us reclaim our time and attention.

Start with small steps:

  1. Take Breaks: Set specific times during the day to step away from your devices. Use these moments to stretch, walk, or simply breathe.
  2. Mindful Mornings: Begin your day with a few minutes of mindfulness. Whether it’s enjoying your coffee without any digital distractions or practicing a brief meditation, starting your day with intention can set a positive tone.
  3. Nature Walks: Spend time outdoors, even if it’s just a short walk around your neighborhood. Nature has a way of grounding us and bringing clarity to our minds.
  4. Tech-Free Time: Establish tech-free zones or times, such as during meals or before bed. Use this time to connect with loved ones or engage in a hobby.
  5. Gratitude Journaling: Keep a journal where you write down things you’re grateful for each day. This simple practice can shift your focus from what’s lacking to what’s abundant in your life.

Remember, these small changes can add up to significant improvements in your overall well-being. It’s not about perfection but about progress. By embracing simplicity and being present, we can find greater joy and fulfillment in our daily lives.

Staying Connected

Even while on the road, I’m still with you in spirit. I'll be back soon with more stories and reflections. Until then, take care, stay present, and embrace the beauty of simplicity.
