The After-Vacation Glow
Unlock New Creative Heights by Shifting Your Perspective

Coming back from a vacation is like hitting play after a perfect pause – everything rushes back, but you're seeing it with fresh eyes. My recent bikepacking adventure with Jana through Denmark was just the kind of reset I needed, allowing us to escape the routine and reconnect with what really matters.

We covered over 1,100 kilometers along Denmark's breathtaking west coast, from the German border up to Skagen and back. This trip wasn't just about the miles; it was about diving headfirst into the landscape and rediscovering the thrill of exploration.

"Happiness is found in life's simplest pleasures, not just in reaching the destination, but in embracing the journey itself."
Each day was a treasure hunt of small joys: stumbling upon vegan ice cream in a tiny campsite freezer, or savoring a non-alcoholic beer on the beach as the sun called it a day. These moments were pure magic, reminding us of the happiness found in life's simplest pleasures.

There was a rhythm to our ride – the steady hum of wheels on pavement creating a soundtrack for reflection and presence. Jana and I shared endless conversations, but there were also stretches of silence that spoke volumes. In those moments, we felt an unspoken connection to each other and the world.

One of the highlights was passing Rubjerg Knude, the iconic lighthouse where we got engaged in 2019. It was a powerful reminder of our journey together and the adventures still ahead. That lighthouse stands as a testament to promises kept and dreams in motion.

"Overcoming obstacles together strengthens our bond and reveals new perspectives on familiar paths."
Battling strong headwinds tested our grit and patience, but pushing through them together only strengthened our bond. There's something incredibly satisfying about overcoming obstacles side by side, reinforcing the resilience we've built over the years. Riding the same paths in reverse added depth to our journey, offering new perspectives on familiar terrain.

This adventure was a powerful reminder that life isn't just about moving forward – it's about embracing the journey and all its varied paths. Looking at the world from different angles can reveal hidden beauty and complexity. This trip taught us that challenges, whether literal or metaphorical, often lead to the most rewarding moments of growth and understanding. It's a lesson I'm carrying forward, as I strive to maintain a healthy work-life balance and embrace change in both my personal and professional life.
Advice for Photographers: In your work, focus on capturing genuine emotions and unexpected moments during weddings. These small joys often tell the most powerful stories. Remember to appreciate the process, not just the final product, as each moment contributes to the narrative you’re crafting.
"Slow down and savor each moment – true happiness doesn't require much, just a bike, good company, and an open road."
This journey also highlighted the importance of slowing down and savoring each moment, finding joy in the process, not just the destination. It reinforced that happiness doesn't require much – just a bike, good company, and an open road.
A Meeting of Minds: Brand Audit with Tim
As the open road shifted my perspective, so did my recent meeting with Tim from Studio Godewind. Transitioning from landscapes to branding, this brand audit offered a fresh look at Hafenliebe, much like cycling familiar paths from a new direction revealed new insights.

For those who've seen my Instagram stories, you know I've been exploring the depths of my brand identity. Tim, whose wedding I captured in 2019, was the perfect partner for this journey. Together with Mieke, they run Studio Godewind, a design powerhouse in Hamburg specializing in Strategic Brand Experience Design. Tim's unique perspective as both a professional and former client made our discussions particularly eye-opening.

Advice for Photographers: To evaluate your brand, consider asking for client feedback to understand how they perceive your work. Analyze your portfolio for consistency in style and message. Ensure your online presence reflects your brand identity and tells your story effectively.
Additional Tip: Try a quick exercise to clarify your brand. List three adjectives that describe your photography style, and check if your website, social media, and portfolio consistently reflect these attributes.
"A brand audit is like a deep dive into a business's soul, uncovering opportunities to elevate and refine its impact."
A brand audit is like a deep dive into a business's soul. It's about assessing where your brand stands in the market, understanding public perception, and pinpointing strengths and areas for growth. This process reveals hidden opportunities to enhance brand consistency and impact across all touchpoints. For me, it was about bridging the gap between my vision for Hafenliebe and how it's perceived by my audience.
We explored core values, visual identity, and the emotional resonance of my brand with clients. This experience underscored the value of outside perspectives in refining and elevating a brand. Our discussions tackled whether photographers need branding – a question that's often glossed over. Branding isn't just logos or color schemes; it's the entire vibe and experience clients take away.
"Branding can set you apart or let your work speak for itself – it's a personal choice for every photographer."
For photographers, branding can be a game-changer or a constraint. A strong brand can set you apart, attracting clients aligned with your style and ethos. It creates memorable experiences that lead to referrals and repeat business. However, some photographers thrive on flexibility and spontaneity, preferring to let their work speak without a predefined brand identity. It's a personal choice driven by goals and the clientele you aim to attract.
During our meeting, we identified areas for improvement, focusing on enhancing processes for myself and my clients. Social media is a challenge – maintaining regular and authentic brand visibility is crucial. Branding goes beyond aesthetics; it's about crafting a cohesive and engaging experience across all platforms.
"Feedback and change are powerful tools – the audit reminded me of their importance in growth and innovation."
The audit revealed that my brand's foundation is rock-solid, with a clear market position. There's no need for drastic changes, but continuous refinement and attention to detail are essential. This meeting wasn't just a business exercise; it was a reminder of the power of feedback and embracing change. It pushed me to consider improvements, especially in areas like social media, which don't come naturally to me.
This collaborative exploration has left me inspired and excited to implement new ideas, ensuring Hafenliebe continues to grow and connect with current and future clients.
Exciting Changes on the Horizon
Fueled by insights from both my travels and the brand audit, I'm charged with fresh energy for the future of Hafenliebe. With this renewed perspective, I'm excited to share some upcoming developments.
I'm on the verge of finalizing a partnership with a big player in the photography world. This collaboration is set to revolutionize my creative toolkit, bringing new energy and possibilities to my work. While the details are still under wraps, this change is incredibly motivating and promises to open up new avenues for exploration. I'm looking forward to revealing more soon, and I'm sure those who have been part of my journey will share in the excitement.
Alongside this partnership, I'm working on several projects tailored for photographers. One of these is a new set of Lightroom presets and an AI profile developed with my friends at Imagen. These tools are designed to boost creativity and streamline workflows, offering real value to fellow creatives.
I'm also toying with the idea of hosting a workshop later this year, after a hiatus of a few years. If that piques your interest, let me know – your feedback will shape this potential event to be truly beneficial for you.
This phase of development has reignited my passion for enhancing and refining Hafenliebe. Even amidst the busy 2024 wedding season, I'm looking ahead to 2025 and beyond, envisioning how the brand can evolve and continue to make an impact. Embracing change and innovation while staying true to Hafenliebe's core values is crucial.
Returning to work after the vacation has also sparked reflections on the work-life balance. Bikepacking reminded me of the joy in simplicity and the beauty of living with less. It's a lesson I'm integrating into my daily routine, ensuring I prioritize the things that truly matter.
"In a fast-paced world, finding balance is key – carving out space for life within work is essential."
In our fast-paced world, work can easily overshadow moments of joy and connection. But this journey, both literal and metaphorical, has reinforced the importance of finding balance. I'm committed to carving out space for life within work and making conscious choices to prioritize what truly matters.

Advice for Photographers: Consider incorporating a simple daily routine to help maintain balance in your life. Set aside time each week for personal projects or outdoor activities that recharge your creativity. Whether it's a walk in the park, a short photography excursion, or dedicating time to a hobby, these moments can provide a much-needed reset and enhance your work-life harmony.
